An Alert Regarding a Common Misinterpretation of the Van Genuchten α Parameter Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
van Lier,Quirijn de Jong; Pinheiro,Everton Alves Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Among the equations available to describe the relation between matric potential and soil water content, the soil water retention function, the most commonly used is the equation proposed by Van Genuchten in his 1980 landmark paper. In soil physics literature, especially in Brazil, several authors relate the inverse of the Van Genuchten parameter α to the air-entry pressure. This study aimed to show this common interpretation to be erroneous, as 1/α corresponds to water contents lower than saturation. The deviation depends on the m parameter. In fact, α is merely a scaling parameter relative to the matric potential axis. Recognizing this mathematical fact may improve the interpretation of soil hydraulic properties based on water retention parameters.

Changes in the Structure of a Nigerian Soil under Different Land Management Practices Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ogunwole,Joshua Olalekan; Pires,Luiz Fernando; Shehu,Bello Muhammed.
Quantification of soil physical quality (SPQ) and pore size distribution (PSD) can assist understanding of how changes in land management practices influence dynamics of soil structure, and this understanding could greatly improve the predictability of soil physical behavior and crop yield. The objectives of this study were to measure the SPQ index under two different land management practices (the continuous arable cropping system and natural bush fallow system), and contrast the effects of these practices on the structure of PSD using soil water retention data. Soil water retention curves obtained from a pressure chamber were fitted to van Genuchten’s equation, setting m (= 1-1/n). Although values for soil bulk density were high, soils under the...

FRACTAL SCALING OF PARTICLE AND PORE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS AND ITS RELATION TO SOIL HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY Scientia Agricola
BACCHI,O.O.S.; REICHARDT,K.; VILLA NOVA,N.A..
Fractal scaling has been applied to soils, both for void and solid phases, as an approach to characterize the porous arrangement, attempting to relate particle-size distribution to soil water retention and soil water dynamic properties. One important point of such an analysis is the assumption that the void space geometry of soils reflects its solid phase geometry, taking into account that soil pores are lined by the full range of particles, and that their fractal dimension, which expresses their tortuosity, could be evaluated by the fractal scaling of particle-size distribution. Other authors already concluded that although fractal scaling plays an important role in soil water retention and porosity, particle-size distribution alone is not sufficient to...

Gamma-ray beam attenuation as an auxiliary technique for the evaluation of the soil water retention curve Scientia Agricola
BACCHI,O.O.S.; REICHARDT,K.; OLIVEIRA,J.C.M.; NIELSEN,D.R..
The soil water retention curve is fundamental for the hydraulic characterization of a soil and has many applications in agricultural research as well as in practical agriculture. A new procedure for soil moisture and soil bulk density evaluation inside closed pressure chambers through gamma-ray beam attenuation is presented. The proposed procedure presents several advantages in relation to the traditional process: avoids the need of continuous sample manipulation; minimizes the problem of hysteresis; allows a more precise evaluation of soil moisture by taking into account changes of soil bulk density due to swelling or shrinking on addition or removal of water; allows frequent evaluation of soil moisture without the need of opening the pressure chamber;...

Quantification of the soil physical quality of a tropical oxisol using the S index Scientia Agricola
Tormena,Cássio Antonio; Silva,Álvaro Pires da; Imhoff,Silvia Del Carmen; Dexter,Anthony Roger.
Soil physical quality is fundamental for the sustainability of agro ecosystems. Soil physical quality assessment must be developed using parameters that describe physical behavior. S, a new soil physical parameter has recently been introduced for assessing the soil physical quality. A good soil physical quality has been associated with values of S > 0.035 in soils from temperate climates. However, S has not been evaluated in tropical soils yet. Therefore we tested the hypothesis that S is a reliable soil physical quality indicator of a Typic Hapludox cropped with maize under no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT). Undisturbed samples were collected from each tillage system in the row and interrow positions. Soil bulk density was determined in the...

Revisiting Field Capacity (FC): variation of definition of FC and its estimation from pedotransfer functions Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ottoni Filho,Theophilo Benedicto; Ottoni,Marta Vasconcelos; Oliveira,Muriel Batista de; Macedo,José Ronaldo de; Reichardt,Klaus.
Taking into account the nature of the hydrological processes involved in in situ measurement of Field Capacity (FC), this study proposes a variation of the definition of FC aiming not only at minimizing the inadequacies of its determination, but also at maintaining its original, practical meaning. Analysis of FC data for 22 Brazilian soils and additional FC data from the literature, all measured according to the proposed definition, which is based on a 48-h drainage time after infiltration by shallow ponding, indicates a weak dependency on the amount of infiltrated water, antecedent moisture level, soil morphology, and the level of the groundwater table, but a strong dependency on basic soil properties. The dependence on basic soil properties allowed...

Soil Chemical and Physical Properties on an Inceptisol after Liming (Surface and Incorporated) Associated with Gypsum Application Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Bortolanza,Delcio Rudinei; Klein,Vilson Antonio.
ABSTRACT Inceptsoils have high aluminum contents, and amendments are required to ensure a satisfactory crop development. Liming is efficient in neutralizing Al3+, but when applied to the topsoil its action is restricted to the surface layers, and sometimes lime incorporation into the soil is recommendable. However, tillage may negatively alter physical soil properties. Thus, gypsum could be an alternative to increase Ca2+ levels and reduce Al saturation in deeper layers, without requiring tillage. An experiment was initiated in 2010, to assess chemical and physical soil properties. Soil samples were collected in February 2013. A random block design with sub-subplots and two replications was used. Lime was applied to the surface of the main plot (0, 8 and...

Water retention and s index of an oxisol subjected to weed control methods in a coffee crop Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Siqueira,Raphael Henrique da Silva; Ferreira,Mozart Martins; Alcântara,Elifas Nunes de; Silva,Bruno Montoani; Silva,Raphael Comanducci.
Weed control in different crops affects the chemical, physical, and biological properties of the soil and consequently its structural quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate, using water retention characteristics and the S index, the physical quality of an Oxisol (Red-Yellow Latosol), subjected to weed control during the cultivation of coffee. The following weed control methods were evaluated: harrowing, brushcutting, residue crushing, manual weeding, post-emergence herbicide application, pre-emergence herbicide application, and maintenance of soil cover with peanut forage, Brachiaria grass, and spontaneous vegetation (no weed treatment). The following properties were determined for physical characterization of the soil: bulk density, total...

Weed control methods effect on the hydraulic attributes of a Latosol Agronomy
Pires, Luiz Fernando; Araujo-Junior, Cezar Francisco; Piccolomini Dias, Nivea Maria; Dias Junior, Moacir de Souza; Alcântara, Elifas Nunes de.
Weed management plays a key role in the minimization of soil physical degradation processes such as compaction and hydric erosion. Different weed control managements can induce distinct changes in soil structure. One important soil physical attribute used for the analysis of modifications in soil structure is the soil water retention curve (SWRC). The objective of this work was to verify the use of physico-hydrical attributes to understand the effect of weed control managements on soil structure. Two soil layers (0–0.05 and 0.10–0.15 m) and six weed control managements divided into two groups were analyzed: I. no soil disturbance and ground cover (no weed control, post-emergence herbicide, mechanical mower); and II. soil disturbance and no ground cover...
